Sinead O'Connor- "Nothing compares to you"

Sinead O'Connor- "Nothing compares to you"

Nothing Compares 2 U" is a song which was written and composed by Prince for one of his side projects, The project was celled the Family. Later on made famous by Irish recording artist SinĂ©ad O'Connor, who made a cover of the song and released it as the second single from her second studio album. The album was called "I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got". But not until O'Connor recorded and produced the version along with Nellee Hooper did it become a worldwide hit sensation in 1990. A music video, which has been debated as iconic, was shot and received heavy rotation on MTV. Its lyrics explore feelings of longing from an abandoned lover's point of view.

Mainly shot in Paris, the music video for "Nothing Compares 2 U" was directed by John Maybury. O'Connor's tears toward the end were unplanned. She stated onVH1's 100 Greatest Songs of the 90s that it was caused by the lyric "All the flowers that you planted, Mother/in the back yard/All died when you went away," because she had a very complex relationship with her late mother, who used to abuse her in childhood.

The clip consists almost solely of a closeup on Sinead O'Connor's face as she sings the lyrics, sometimes with angry expression; the rest consists of her walking through an area of Paris, known as the Parc de Saint-Cloud. Toward the end of the video, two tears roll down her face, one on each cheek. In the middle and at the very end of the video there is a shot from O'Connor's photo session for the I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got album cover.

Lip Synching Exercise Evaluation

What have you learned about filming music videos?

I have learnt that while filming music videos, it is really important that that the lyrics are literally sung, even if one may not be able to sing good. If they do not sing the lyrics, It will not look like they are singing because for an example if you watch someone whisper the lyrics of a song and then sing the song it would not look the same.
What have you learnt about filming duets?

I have learnt that if one person hasn't really learnt the song, they might still be able to pull it off but you will be able to tell that there is no enthuses or action on as they are singing the lyrics. So the music video could be ruined.

Describe the process of editing?

We filmed from 3 different angles. Then we we put them as layers on each other and chose which parts we would choose what parts we want from each layer. We also had to make sure the song was in time with the people in the video so it would look right.

What have you learnt about editing music videos?

I have learnt that it is very important that you edit to the beat. My group managed to not do it that much and during the beginning, the editing was too slow. The song was upbeat for most of it so the editing should also be quite and fast.

In what ways could you improve the filming/editing of the sequence?
I could have improved by editing more to the beat.

Music Video Duet Editing Exercise

Music Video Duet Editing Exercise

  1. Using Elton John and Kiki Dee's Don't Go breaking My Heart film a duet from at least three different angles.
  2. Film the song all the way through taking care to look into the camera where appropriate and think carefully about sightliness. also, watch out for the mise-en-scene. Do not film into a light source.
  3. When editing upload each of the complete takes of the song and layer them on seperate Final Cut timelines
  4. Upload the music and synchronise each of the layers to the music
  5. You can choose how to edit between the layers and each will be completely synchronised throughout.

Our Pop Vox Evaluation

Pop Vox Evaluation

The purpose of the research conducted was to gain an insight on members of the public's opinion on music and how it affects their life's.

These were the questions which we asked:

  • Do you watch music videos?
  • What is your favourite music videos?
  • What make a great music video?
  • What do you like about music videos?
  • What types of media do you use to watch music videos?

The questions that we used, were very easy to understand. This was good as everyone could understand the question so much that they can easily understand it. But on the other hand, we can also say the questions are too simplistic. In a sense this has effected some of the answers given. For an example, when we asked "What is your favourite music video?" Some people would say just say the music video and nothing more. But what we really want to know is why they like it so much. Therefor it would have been even better if we changed the question to "What is your favourite music video?"
and w hy is it your favourite m sic video. Achiving this would have lead to more of the answers being more developed.

As there was only 3 members of our group, we found it sometimes time consuming to get more people to answer the questions. When we first started filming the pop vox, we had trouble remembering exactly were the person answering the question was standing. This lead to us putting an object on the floor so the people answering the questions will know where to stand. When we would press play on the video camera, the video camera would move a little bit and you could see in the video that the camera was shaking. To eliminate this error, we tightened it more onto the tripod. This lead to us avoiding any movement we didn't need.

Permission to use a song

Recently, I sent an email to one of the members of "The colours" regarding if I may have permission to use their song. They have replied me allowing my to use their song as part of my coursework.

Tonight I Let You Go' Lyrics - The Colours

Tonight I Let You Go' Lyrics - The Colours

Your empty promises
Stop filling up my mind while my loves’ away
Temptation calls me
To thisAnd loveless fools believe
Their guilty hearts still bleed
But their cold lifeless heart beats wear them out

[Chorus] Cause you’re the heart break that I couldn’t deal with
You were the mistake
That no-one could save me from
But I knowI’m better off leaving now
You are the only reason I want it more
You know I want to be on my own tonight
I just keep on running
You know I want to be on my own tonight
Tonight I let you go

My insecurities
Playing on my mind, colours never change
You should come back, come back, come back(And look for more)
But love that runs too deep
Stolen moments we couldn’t keep
You should go before the night time lets you down

[Chorus] Cause you’re the heart break that I couldn’t deal with
You were the mistake
That no-one could save me from
But I knowI’m better off leaving now
You are the only reason I want it more
You know I want to be on my own tonight
I just keep on running
You know I want to be on my own tonight
Tonight I let you go

Tonight I let you go
Heart break, heart break
Heart break (tonight I let you go)
Heart, heart break
Heart break, heart break, heart heart break
Tonight, heart break
Heart break, heart break, heart break, heart break, heart break
I just keep on running
You’re the heart break
I couldn’t deal with
You were the mistake that no-one could save me from
But I know I’m better off leaving now
You are the only reason I want it more

You know I want to be on my own tonight
I just keep on running
You know I want to be on my own tonight
Tonight I let you go

Tonight I let you go

Tonight I let you go

The music channel and synergy

 End of the music channel?

With competition from a variety of online platforms, music channels are no longer the strong promotional platforms the once were. In many ways the music video channel is in danger of becoming irrelevant and not needed in society. Online streaming and downloads mean that music and music videos are available instantly without any stress.

Synergy

  • Films
  • TV programs
  • Definition - works as a win win situation for the film/television program and the music artist.
  • Derezzed - Daft punk (Tron Legacy)
  • 2 Chainz, Wiz Khalifa - We Own It (Fast & Furious)

Synergy is a good thing as it helps both the artist and the movie. Therefore none of them can really complain and no one is exploited in a sense. But on the other hand, this can lead part of the audience away from watching the film because the may dislike the music artist. Or they may rather like them, you could argue that synergy is a gamble because you could turn people away from watching the film or get them to really want to watch the film.
