Music video draft

I have put a draft for my music video on YouTube and I have been waiting for some feed back of the positives and negatives. This should hopefully help me to dispose of errors or shots which may not be good in the public's eyes.

Filming Week 3

So far this week this week it has been raining for both monday and tuesday. This a took some of my time for filming. This wee the main character has said to me that he has learnt the lyrics of the song. So due to the weather I will be filming inside. Time is going quickly so I need to make the most out of my time.

Filming Week 2

During this weeks filming, looking back at the footage, it became clear to me that some of the people I chose to be in the video did not suite it. This has lead to me changing some of the people in the video because I want the music video to look as professional as possible. This was a big decision I had to make because I know that by doing this I will have to re-film a lot of scenes.

For the first half of this week the weather was seriously rainy so I did not film as it would obviously not make sense in one scene that its raining and a continuation scene had rain. Also i did not want to film because i did not want there to be any possibility that the camera may stop working. Luckily at the end of the week the weather cleared up so we were able to do some more filming until it started raining again.

Filming for the Music Video Week 1

Recently I have started filming. My video involves a boy band so today I was focusing on one of the boys. During this weeks filming one difficulty was that that character kept on laughing when he was supposed to look serious. Eventually after multiple takes we worked it out. Another difficulty was that people kept on peeping during the scenes. This made it look unprofessional so we had to do multiple takes until it was presentable enough. But on the other hand, when the boy did the scene properly, it looks very good with great acting.

Michael Jackson Pop videos

He joined the Jackson brothers in 1964, a band formed by four of his brothers. When Michael was eight, he started singing lead vocals and subsequently the group changed their name to the Jackson 5. From 1966 to 1968 the band toured the Midwest strongly, in order to gain a name for themselves and succeeded by winning a major local talent show with covers of Motown; before going on to record several songs which include “Big Boy” in 1967. The magazine Rolling Stone described the Jackson 5 as “a Prodigy”.

The Jackson 5 signed a record deal with Epic Records (partnered with CBS Records).  They changed their name to ‘The Jackons’ with Michael as the lead singer. They toured internationally at the same time as releasing six new albums between 1976 and 1984. The album ‘Off The Wall’ in which they produced in 1979 proved successful, with collaborating artists such as Stevie Wonder and Paul McCartney who helped song-write.  Also in 1979 Michael broke his nose in a dance practice, and subsequently complained of breathing difficulties after, and was consequently referred to a doctor to perform his second rhinoplasty and other operations. This changed his appearance and the audience became more involved with his life, however his career was still moving on up with success, including winning three music awards at the American Music Awards in 1981.

Popularity of the music videos of Michael Jackson’s songs such as Beat It, Billie Jean and Thriller were credited with transforming the medium into an art form and a promotional tool and have helped to bring the relatively new television channel MTV to fame. Michael Jackson have popularised a number of dance techniques such as tobot and the moonwalk through stage performances and music videos.  Numerous hip hop, pop, R&B and rock artists have influenced by the distinctive musical sound and vocal style of Michael Jackson. Michael Jackson has used complex story lines, dance routines, special effects and cameo appearances in order to transform the music video into an art form and a promotional tool.

"Thriller" (1983) has been named as the most successful music video ever by the Guinness World Records. "Leave me alone" (1987) was nominated for four Billboard Music Video Awards which it won three of them and also it won a Golden Lion award for the quality of the special effects used in its production. The music video for "Black or White" (1991) was accompanied by a controversial music video with a largest audience viewing ever for a music video. "Remember The Times" also became one of his longest videos at over nine minutes. It has featured ground-breaking visual effects.

The music video for “Scream”(1995) which was directed by Mark Romanek have gained 11 MTV Video Music Award Nominations and have won best dance video, best choreography,  and best art direction. It won a Grammy for Best Music video, Short Form a year later and Guinness World Recordlisted it as the most expensive music video ever made at a cost of $7 million.

The music video for the "Earth Song" (1997) has accompanied by an expensive and well – received music video have gained a Grammy nomination for Best Music Video, Short Form in1997. Special effects have been used in that music video to reverse the time. The video for Ghosts is over 38 minutes long and holds Guinness World Record as the world's longest music video.

Sinead O'Connor- "Nothing compares to you"

Sinead O'Connor- "Nothing compares to you"

Nothing Compares 2 U" is a song which was written and composed by Prince for one of his side projects, The project was celled the Family. Later on made famous by Irish recording artist Sinéad O'Connor, who made a cover of the song and released it as the second single from her second studio album. The album was called "I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got". But not until O'Connor recorded and produced the version along with Nellee Hooper did it become a worldwide hit sensation in 1990. A music video, which has been debated as iconic, was shot and received heavy rotation on MTV. Its lyrics explore feelings of longing from an abandoned lover's point of view.

Mainly shot in Paris, the music video for "Nothing Compares 2 U" was directed by John Maybury. O'Connor's tears toward the end were unplanned. She stated onVH1's 100 Greatest Songs of the 90s that it was caused by the lyric "All the flowers that you planted, Mother/in the back yard/All died when you went away," because she had a very complex relationship with her late mother, who used to abuse her in childhood.

The clip consists almost solely of a closeup on Sinead O'Connor's face as she sings the lyrics, sometimes with angry expression; the rest consists of her walking through an area of Paris, known as the Parc de Saint-Cloud. Toward the end of the video, two tears roll down her face, one on each cheek. In the middle and at the very end of the video there is a shot from O'Connor's photo session for the I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got album cover.

Lip Synching Exercise Evaluation

What have you learned about filming music videos?

I have learnt that while filming music videos, it is really important that that the lyrics are literally sung, even if one may not be able to sing good. If they do not sing the lyrics, It will not look like they are singing because for an example if you watch someone whisper the lyrics of a song and then sing the song it would not look the same.
What have you learnt about filming duets?

I have learnt that if one person hasn't really learnt the song, they might still be able to pull it off but you will be able to tell that there is no enthuses or action on as they are singing the lyrics. So the music video could be ruined.

Describe the process of editing?

We filmed from 3 different angles. Then we we put them as layers on each other and chose which parts we would choose what parts we want from each layer. We also had to make sure the song was in time with the people in the video so it would look right.

What have you learnt about editing music videos?

I have learnt that it is very important that you edit to the beat. My group managed to not do it that much and during the beginning, the editing was too slow. The song was upbeat for most of it so the editing should also be quite and fast.

In what ways could you improve the filming/editing of the sequence?
I could have improved by editing more to the beat.

Music Video Duet Editing Exercise

Music Video Duet Editing Exercise

  1. Using Elton John and Kiki Dee's Don't Go breaking My Heart film a duet from at least three different angles.
  2. Film the song all the way through taking care to look into the camera where appropriate and think carefully about sightliness. also, watch out for the mise-en-scene. Do not film into a light source.
  3. When editing upload each of the complete takes of the song and layer them on seperate Final Cut timelines
  4. Upload the music and synchronise each of the layers to the music
  5. You can choose how to edit between the layers and each will be completely synchronised throughout.

Our Pop Vox Evaluation

Pop Vox Evaluation

The purpose of the research conducted was to gain an insight on members of the public's opinion on music and how it affects their life's.

These were the questions which we asked:

  • Do you watch music videos?
  • What is your favourite music videos?
  • What make a great music video?
  • What do you like about music videos?
  • What types of media do you use to watch music videos?

The questions that we used, were very easy to understand. This was good as everyone could understand the question so much that they can easily understand it. But on the other hand, we can also say the questions are too simplistic. In a sense this has effected some of the answers given. For an example, when we asked "What is your favourite music video?" Some people would say just say the music video and nothing more. But what we really want to know is why they like it so much. Therefor it would have been even better if we changed the question to "What is your favourite music video?"
and w hy is it your favourite m sic video. Achiving this would have lead to more of the answers being more developed.

As there was only 3 members of our group, we found it sometimes time consuming to get more people to answer the questions. When we first started filming the pop vox, we had trouble remembering exactly were the person answering the question was standing. This lead to us putting an object on the floor so the people answering the questions will know where to stand. When we would press play on the video camera, the video camera would move a little bit and you could see in the video that the camera was shaking. To eliminate this error, we tightened it more onto the tripod. This lead to us avoiding any movement we didn't need.

Permission to use a song

Recently, I sent an email to one of the members of "The colours" regarding if I may have permission to use their song. They have replied me allowing my to use their song as part of my coursework.

Tonight I Let You Go' Lyrics - The Colours

Tonight I Let You Go' Lyrics - The Colours

Your empty promises
Stop filling up my mind while my loves’ away
Temptation calls me
To thisAnd loveless fools believe
Their guilty hearts still bleed
But their cold lifeless heart beats wear them out

[Chorus] Cause you’re the heart break that I couldn’t deal with
You were the mistake
That no-one could save me from
But I knowI’m better off leaving now
You are the only reason I want it more
You know I want to be on my own tonight
I just keep on running
You know I want to be on my own tonight
Tonight I let you go

My insecurities
Playing on my mind, colours never change
You should come back, come back, come back(And look for more)
But love that runs too deep
Stolen moments we couldn’t keep
You should go before the night time lets you down

[Chorus] Cause you’re the heart break that I couldn’t deal with
You were the mistake
That no-one could save me from
But I knowI’m better off leaving now
You are the only reason I want it more
You know I want to be on my own tonight
I just keep on running
You know I want to be on my own tonight
Tonight I let you go

Tonight I let you go
Heart break, heart break
Heart break (tonight I let you go)
Heart, heart break
Heart break, heart break, heart heart break
Tonight, heart break
Heart break, heart break, heart break, heart break, heart break
I just keep on running
You’re the heart break
I couldn’t deal with
You were the mistake that no-one could save me from
But I know I’m better off leaving now
You are the only reason I want it more

You know I want to be on my own tonight
I just keep on running
You know I want to be on my own tonight
Tonight I let you go

Tonight I let you go

Tonight I let you go

The music channel and synergy

 End of the music channel?

With competition from a variety of online platforms, music channels are no longer the strong promotional platforms the once were. In many ways the music video channel is in danger of becoming irrelevant and not needed in society. Online streaming and downloads mean that music and music videos are available instantly without any stress.

Synergy

  • Films
  • TV programs
  • Definition - works as a win win situation for the film/television program and the music artist.
  • Derezzed - Daft punk (Tron Legacy)
  • 2 Chainz, Wiz Khalifa - We Own It (Fast & Furious)

Synergy is a good thing as it helps both the artist and the movie. Therefore none of them can really complain and no one is exploited in a sense. But on the other hand, this can lead part of the audience away from watching the film because the may dislike the music artist. Or they may rather like them, you could argue that synergy is a gamble because you could turn people away from watching the film or get them to really want to watch the film.

Star Theory Richard Dyer

Stars As Constructions

Dyer believes artists are constructed through artificial images such as advertising, films, magazines and music. He claims that consumers prefer artist to convey their true emotions themselves and not be groomed by record labels who try to create a fake image for them. A "real" artist can can use this as their unique selling point.

Industry and Audiences
Dyer also believes that stars are manufactured to make money for their record labels by appealing to . target audiences. As a result of this, record labels have to cater different artists for certain target audiences as there are both niche and whole markets. Examples of record labels doing this can be seen through mirror branding, both  Rage against the machine

Are Andrew Goodwin's theories supported or not supported?

Andrew Godwin has identified the following features of music videos.
" Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics" e.g stage performances in metal videos and dance routines for boy/girl bands.
This video is typical of metal bands. The video agrees with Godwins theory as it shows that there was a big stage performance.Even the characteristics of the musicions is very typical of metal bans, with all of them having long hair and tattoos.

Both music videos from jls and the pussycat dolls are typical boy/girl band videos. Both videos agree with Goodwin's theory because they both have dance routines. This could lead to people imitating the dance moves the that could eventually result to an increase of sales. We could also in infer that every individual is wearing completely different clothes. This was not just a coincidence, this happens so that could appeal to multiple types of audiences which would also lead to an increase in sales. Also in these videos, there are multiple times where the are close up shots on the group members. This to show that they are good looking which would attract the male and female audience.

Goodwin also said that "there is a relationship between lyrics and visuals(either illustrative, amplifying, contradicting)". This music video by Rihanna clearly agrees with Goodwin's theory as in the video you can see rain while the lyrics involves umbrellas and rain.

A Brief History of the Pop Video

A Brief History of the Pop Video

During the 1950's, and out brake of swinging pop music came to existence through Elvis Presley. Due to the copyright
infringement, radio stations could not play records. This lead to workers of the radio station singing the songs instead of the radio station playing the official version of the song.

After a few years the law was changer to allow radio stations such as radio Caroline and radio London to play the records a few hours a week. This was known as 'Needle Time'. But meanwhile pirate stations were going a few miles out of the country to set up their own radio stations to illegally play official records.

During the decade of the sixties, English music became dominant over the world because of a group called the Beatles. This was the group who revolutionized pop music making the 1960's the "swinging sixties". The idea of radio London and radio Caroline lead to the formation of BBC Radio 1. BBC also made something known as "Top of the Pops". As the Beatles always number 1 in the charts, the were the most wanted music artists to go on top of the pops. Artist who went on top of the pops mimed their songs. So instead, the Beatles produced shrt films to please their fans and to and to promote their songs e.g "Paperback Winter".

Case study 1 – Jamie Thraves

Thraves was making films while he was in higher education, and used an award-winning short film to secure his place within the video production company Factory Films. When Thraves began shooting music videos, they made at a low budget of approximately £5,000 each. When record labels want to make a music video, a commissioner sends the track to 5-10 directors, and they submit their own take on what the video could look like. Thraves and many other directors have to bid their ideas on each video, trying to get there work noticed which their not getting any money for. Once the production company have chosen the idea the, that director is told to construct the video and is salaried for their work. This is how Jamie Thraves has had the opportunity to make his previous music videos. For many directors, this model of work is viewed as a precarious existence where livelihood is dependant on each commission. Jamie Thraves submitted treatments for his two best known videos and each was accepted

.Jamie Thraves has made two memorable music videos. The first of which was Just by Radiohead, which had a £100,000 budget and was shot in only three days. The other is The Scientist by Coldplay which had double the budget and was shot in the same amount of time. The Scientist was an extremely clever video in which Thraves used the lyric "Back to the Start" to create a backwards narrative, slowly revealing to the viewer it was a car crash which caused the character to lose his girlfriend. As the video starts at the aftermath of the crash and rewinds to the events preceding the crash, Chris Martin, the lead singer had to learn the backwards mouth movements to the lyrics of the song, while doing everything else normally to give the allusion that he was singing the song even when the footage was reversed. This took a lot of rehearsing, and resulted in a very effective video, thanks to Thraves' idea. The non-linear narrative of the video is an ideal hook to keep the viewers excited, as they slowly learn exactly what is going on. Hooks are most prominent in Thraves' videos and serve an equally important purpose in Just.

Just is different to The Scientist in the respect that it doesn't bear much relation to the lyrics of the song, "You do it to Yourself". The video was filmed new Liverpool Street Station in London and features the band playing the song in an apartment while looking down at events going on in the street. Here, Thraves has inserted an interesting narrative to capture the audience's imagination which seems quite dull at first, but gains momentum as more characters within the video become interested in the events taking place. Here, an avarage-looking businessman is walking down the street when suddenly, he lies down on the pavement. Another man trips over the first and initially thinks he's hurt... why else would he be lying on the ground? The man responds that he is fine and would rather be left alone, but the first man pushes further and demands why is he lying down again. As more people approach and ask what's wrong, the man continues to refuse to speak. Eventually, after the arrival of a policeman and much persecution from the first man, the man laying on the floor finally gives in.

Finding the right music

I will be using websites such as youtube.com and unasigned.com to find an unsigned artist to use their song providing us being able to receive permission from them.

Non- Copyright music

                                                          Non- Copyright music

Copyright refers to the exclusive right to make copieslicense, and otherwise exploit a literary, musical, or artisticwork, whether printed, audio, video, etc. Works granted such right by law on or after January 1,1978, are protected for the lifetime of the author or creator and for a period of 50 years after his orher death.

Therefore I can infer from this that it would be better if I chose and unsigned artist to use there song instead of a signed artist because it would be very difficult to get permission from a signed artist.

Thoughts on the music video I will construct

After all the reasonable ideas I had for my music video, I came to a conclusion that I would like my music video to imitate a boy band of three members. From taking time out to look at many A2 music videos, most of them did not involved bands. And I know that the exam board like originality. Also I have been talking to many past students who made their own A2 music videos. And the two things they both told me was that the the lip synching should be practically perfect to boost my grade and that. It is very important that I edit to the beat of the song. Through this journey I go through I will use these main two points as part of my foundation for success.

Ace hood - Bugatti

The artist of 'Bugatti' is a man named as 'Ace Hood'. The genre of the music is hip hop. This video has 21, 296, 124 views on youtube.
I find this music video very interesting as it basically goes back in time and and show the events leading to the what happened at the beginning. Lip synching takes a very important part in the video as multiple times the video cuts from the story line to a person lip synching. The single has sold over 500,000 copies and certified Gold by the RIAA.
